What is PCOS?

PCOS: Polycystic Ovary Syndrome

It is a hormonal medical issue that occurs in a female during the reproductive years. Though the causes are unknown, it is suspected that genetic as well as environmental factors are involved.

In this condition, the ovaries produce an abnormal level of androgens (these are male sex hormones that naturally occur in females but in small amounts). This may cause many small cysts that form in ovaries which might occur in other medical issues as well.

If you suspect you might have any hormonal issues, then you can visit Scientific Pathology’s website and book for an appointment to get tested as it is the largest and the best pathology lab in Uttar Pradesh!

Symptoms:

  • Large ovaries or ovaries with many cysts

  • Weight gain, specifically in the abdomen are, around the belly

  • Hirsutism- excess body hair on the back, chest, stomach, etc.

  • Irregular periods, light periods or missed periods

  • Skin tags, acne and oily skin, male pattern baldness, thick/dark skin on the back of the neck, armpits, etc.

  • Infertility

Diagnosis:

If any of the above symptoms occur, then book for the following tests or as recommended by your doctor with us, at Scientific Pathology, one of the best diagnostic labs- Agra:

  • Ultrasound: An ultrasound is used to check the size of the ovary and to check for any cysts; it is also used to see the thickness of the uterus lining (endometrium).

  • Blood Tests: A blood test can reveal the levels of androgens and other hormones and if the levels of the androgens are high, then it might be an indication of the existence of PCOS.
