Jaundice in adults could be an indication of an infection or liver disease; it can occur when one’s liver is not able to properly process red blood cells as they break down! If you are experiencing the yellowing of your skin and your eyes are whitening, it is essential that you, with your doctor’s consultation, get diagnostic tests done immediately. We, at Scientific Pathology, offer 1000 different tests under various disciplines as well as curated health packages that you can choose from according to your requirement or prescription; we also have a pathology collection center in Aligarh.

Symptoms

Apart from the yellowing of the skin and whitening of the eyes, following are the other symptoms of Jaundice:

  • Clay/pale coloured stool
  • Weight loss
  • Yellow colour inside mouth
  • Fatigue
  • Pain in the abdomen, in the region where the liver is and subsequent swelling of the abdomen that occurs due to fluid accumulation
  • Loss of appetite
  • High fever and chills
  • Itching
  • Vomiting
  • Brown/dark coloured urine

Causes

A high level of bilirubin is the major cause of jaundice; it is a symptom of liver disease and damage. Jaundice can also be caused due to other reasons like gallstones, surgery, pancreatitis, autoimmune disorders, excessive consumption of alcohol that results in liver damage, genetic metabolic defects that are rare, certain medication and some viruses. You can book for the bilirubin blood test and the CBC test with any of Scientific Pathology’s diagnostic centres or the pathology collection centre in Aligarh, Firozabad, Hathras, etc.

Treatment

Once you have got your diagnosis, consult with your doctor who will prescribe the treatment for jaundice according to the underlying cause. The itching can be treated with either medication in severe cases or topically managing it. In case of liver damage, one might need to take medication or liver transplant in severe cases.
