What is the Protein Electrophoresis Test & Why Should One Get Tested?
The protein electrophoresis test is a blood test that is used to measure certain proteins in one’s blood. Our pathology lab will test the blood sample by separating the proteins on the basis of their electrical charge which is then used to find the existence of abnormal substances known as M protein.
The existence of these M proteins indicates the presence of myeloma or multiple myeloma which is a type of cancer which affects the white blood cells/plasma cells in the bone marrow, as well as other types of blood cancers. The serum is tested to find the presence of abnormal proteins and/or the absence of normal proteins. This test is extremely important so that the doctors can discuss and plan the course of treatment immediately.
